4 Things to Do in Mirissa, Sri Lanka

I’ve been to 5 different places in the southern coast of Sri Lanka, but Mirissa always has my heart. It has something for everybody and offers beautiful beach vibes, rich marine life and great food. Whether you’re after adventure or relaxation, here are the top 4 must-do experiences, including how much they’ll cost and tips.

1. Go whale watching in the Indian Ocean 🐋

Mirissa is one of the best places in the world to see blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins in the wild.

  • Best time to visit: Early morning, around 6:30 AM. Most boats leave by 7:00 AM. Sea is calmer, and the chances of sightings are highest.
  • Season: November to April (peak sightings).
  • Price: Expect to pay between $50-60 USD per adult and $30 per kids aged 5 and above for ethical whale watching companies

My recommendation here is to choose ethical operators who don’t chase or overcrowd the whales. We went in February and used Raja and the whales. The fee includes a small breakfast and some snacks. The length of the tour depends on when you spot a whale. We were lucky enough to spot two of them and one even blew out some water.

Pro-tip: The sea was extremely choppy and 80% of the boat ended up being seasick. My advice would be to take a seasickness pill beforehand if you are prone to seasickness.

2. Catch the sunset at parrot rock 🌅

Parrot Rock is a giant rock formation wedged in between Mirissa and Turtle beach with panoramic views of Mirissa Bay. A short climb here will take you to an elevated spot that offers great sunset views.

  • Best time to visit: Early morning between 5:30 am – 7 am as it can get quite crowded for sunset.

  • Price: Free, but bring footwear if the tide is low and you’re walking over the reef.

Keep in mind that there is a small climb (about 10 metres) on a wonky staircase. It’s manageable for most people but take caution with small children and elderly.

Pro tip: Avoid high tide, as the crossing becomes slippery and dangerous. Also carry a water-proof pouch to keep your phone and other valuables safe from the tide while crossing.

3. Enjoy a beachside seafood dinner 🍽️

Fresh seafood, view of the beach under the stars and the waves hitting your feet as you have dinner – doesn’t that sound like a dream. That’s exactly what you’ll get when you walk along the Mirissa beach coast and pick one of the many restaurants by the beach. Choose your catch of the day and watch it cooked to perfection.

  • Best time to visit: 7 PM onwards. Perfect for a relaxed dinner atmosphere.

  • Price:
    • Grilled fish or prawns: LKR 2,000–3,000 (USD 6–10).
    • Lobster/crab dishes: LKR 3,500–5,000+ (USD 12–18+) depending on size.

  • Recommended spot: I dined at W & D restaurant and loved it. They had a kids menu which our toddler enjoyed. We didn’t have much of an appetite on the day, so we ordered Tom Yam Goong (amazingly juicy and fresh prawns), a veggie pasta, and fish and chips for my daughter. The total came up to about $33 USD with a small tip.

Pro tip: Bargain a little if you’re choosing seafood by weight. The competition for restaurants along the shoreline is rife, and they’d be more than willing to reduce prices.

4. Walk Up to Coconut Tree Hill 🌴

One of the best photo spots in Mirissa, Coconut Tree Hill is a stunning red-earth headland covered in swaying coconut palms with a panoramic view of the coastline. It’s scenic and completely Instagram-worthy.

  • Best time to visit: Sunrise (6:00 AM – 7:00 AM): Fewer people, cooler weather, softer light.

Sunset (5:30 PM – 6:30 PM): Warmer tones and golden hour magic, but expect big crowds and it’s tough to get a good photo of the view or yourself without someone in it.

  • Price: Free (Open 24/7, no entry fee)

  • How to get there: A 10–15 min walk from central Mirissa Beach.

  • Pro tips:

    • Bring water and wear good footwear—there’s a short but slightly steep incline and any footwear with a good grip is recommended

    • Be respectful of the area—it’s technically private land, but public access is allowed.

    • For great photos, shoot from a low angle to get the palms towering overhead.

📸 Perfect for: Drone shots, golden hour selfies, and peaceful ocean views.

Best Time to Visit

The peak season is between December to March when it’s dry, sunny and has calmer seas. It’s also the perfect season for whale watching and water sports. We’ve been twice to Mirissa – once in February and once in March. We felt that March was hotter and more humid than February and felt sapping at times. We also had light showers in March but nothing for more than 30 mins.

Off-season is from May to September and I don’t recommend traveling at this time as the monsoon can get pretty intense. The seas are also rougher and there is no whale watching at this time.

Where to stay in Mirissa

Budget stay: We stayed at Anchorage and paid $30 USD for one night with a last minute promotional offer. We reached Mirissa late and essentially wanted something only for one night which was on the cheaper side, close to the beach and provided breakfast. This fit the bill.

Even though the room was pretty basic, we loved the customer service and the location. They upgraded our room on arrival to a bigger room as they saw we had a very active 2 year old with us. The breakfast was sufficient with toast, eggs, fruits and tea/coffee and juice.

Mid-range: We didn’t stay here but we’ve had a couple of friends in Sri Lanka recommend The Spice House to us for its rustic rooms and great breakfast. It also has a very tropical vibe to it with a nice outdoor swimming pool.

Luxury: I cannot recommend Triple O Six enough. The basic rooms are spacious with a bohemian theme. But if you can afford it, the suite sugar is well worth it for its jacuzzi with a view. Great swimming pool, customer service and a wide spread for the buffet breakfast. The breakfast also boasted the best fish curry we had in Sri Lanka.

Final tips for visiting Mirissa

  •  If you are a solo traveler or a couple and know how to ride a scooter, you can rent one from the many rentals available in Mirissa. It typically costs around 2000 LKR ($6 USD) a day. We preferred it to Tuk-Tuks as it saved us the hassle of negotiating the price each time. It also gave us flexibility with our plans and made it easier to visit nearby beaches like Weligama and Ahangama.

  • If you don’t know how to ride one – fear not – tuk-tuks are the easiest way to get around and are available pretty much everywhere. You can install the PickMe app to prebook tuk-tuks or use it to get a sense of the price you should pay for your destination. Always agree on the price before riding, even if you book via PickMe. Some drivers tend to ask for a little bit over the price shown on the app. It’s up to you to cancel if you feel that’s too much or pay it to avoid the extra minutes waiting for the next ride.

  • Mirissa during peak and shoulder-season is hot and humid. Always carry water, sun screen and shades/caps when you head out. You can also try out tender coconuts from the many vendors on the street-side for an instant hit of hydration.
